The Homestead of Orvidai is a private open-air museum, hosting an exhibit of modern, sacral and folk art, founded by folk artist, sculptor and Franciscan Brother Gabriel - Vilius Orvidas. Stone and wood sculptures, items, made from wood roots, logs and every day’s life objects, are exhibited in a huge field. You can find even an old Russian tank here.
The start of this exhibition was created by Vilius Orvidas father Kazimieras, who was gathering interesting wood items and stones from the fields and his son Vilius was sculpting them. Exhibition was quite sacral, and was unpopular in soviet times and even destroyed for a few times.
But the homestead was popular between tourists, artists and intellectuals. Also it was a refuge for people, surviving the ills of life. Vilius Orvilas home were always open for people, released from prison, people with addiction problems, teenagers, having problems at home.
Today this museum is famous not only in Lithuania, but also in the foreign countries
